Leather care

We are very proud of the natural patina that our leather develops over time.

For some of our products, such as the Appenzeller shopper in cognac or light brown, we use untreated or only lightly treated leather, which initially reacts visibly to moisture. However, as the patina develops, a more uniform color surface with natural protection is formed.

To make this patina all the more beautiful, we have put together some tips on this page on how to care for your Appenzeller leather products. This way you can extend the life of your leather products. You can also buy the right care product here.

Basic care

Our regional leather generally requires little care and only needs to be re-greased rarely. However, regular care is recommended, especially if the leather is used heavily, to preserve its longevity and beauty. Here are some basic tips and tricks:

Wipe the leather with a damp, soft cloth. The leather will darken at first, but then dries and lightens again after a short time. This means that the leather reacts much less to the first contact with raindrops. The treatment also accelerates the formation of the patina.

Work the leather evenly with a well-moistened, soft cloth. Apply enough pressure and moisture until the color difference has completely disappeared. The regional leather is very resistant. It initially darkens considerably, but lightens again as it dries and then appears more even. This method accelerates the formation of the patina. Do not use products such as greases, waxes or other impregnations for this care, as these can leave permanent stains and signs of wear on the leather.

Over time and through daily use, the surface closes itself. Our dyed leather also develops its own natural patina. However, the aging process is less intense than with untreated colors.

When applying our regional leather, care should be taken to avoid contact and prolonged abrasion on light-colored surfaces and textiles, as the leather can stain easily at first due to its natural texture.

Red leather in particular reacts with water. This can therefore lead to discoloration of collars on light-coloured dogs. We recommend colors such as cognac or black, which are less sensitive.

Avoid contact with rough surfaces that could damage the leather. Pressure marks on the surface can be lightened by applying targeted counter pressure from the inside. Light scratches can be removed by gently rubbing with a soft brush or cloth. For dry spots, which mainly appear on the bottoms of bags and on corners, we recommend treating them with our leather balm .

Dog collars can be rubbed periodically with a little leather balm.

Protect the leather from extreme heat and intense moisture to maintain its suppleness and beauty.

At cooler temperatures, a white film may form on the leather surface. This is merely crystallized grease. This can be easily worked back in with a soft cloth or a soft brush.

Carefully remove dirt with a soft cloth or brush. Do not use any cleaning agents.

Excessively high temperatures, high humidity and unventilated storage locations can damage our leather products. We therefore recommend storing them in an air-permeable linen or cotton bag. When storing bags, for example, for longer periods, the inside should be stuffed with filling material such as paper to maintain the shape of the bag.

Leather balm with beeswax and jojoba oil

It extends the life of smooth leather, keeps the leather supple, breathable and gives it a beautiful shine. It also protects against the penetration of moisture, e.g. in shoes and bags. The beeswax it contains is colorless, has a moisture-repellent effect and gives a shine. The jojoba oil provides a pleasant fragrance.

Application: Apply leather balm thinly and evenly. Allow to absorb well, rub in and polish again later to increase the shine. The leather balm is always absorbed into the leather without leaving any residue. It is neither sticky nor greasy. The leather balm can be used for all colors (smooth leather).

Regional leather

Our regional leather from cow or deer is known for its high quality and traditional production. The leather is characterized by robustness and durability and is therefore ideal for the production of our belts , dog collars, bags and other leather accessories.

We use 100 percent sustainable, regional leather. Only the hides of animals that have spent a good life on a regenerative, organic or biodynamic farm in Germany or Switzerland are used to produce the leather.

The hides are vegetable tanned in a pit tannery in southern Germany, i.e. without the use of chrome or other chemicals. We recently spoke to the initiator and producer Nina on the subject.

The same applies to deerskin, which is produced anyway in the course of regular regulation hunting in Switzerland and thus finds a new, useful purpose.
