Appenzeller Belt x Julian Zigerli: Hot Fabric

As part of the new collab with Julian Zigerli, a world first has been created - the Appenzeller belt made of fabric: woven from thick cotton fabric, with fabric patches of the Appenzeller Alpaufzug. The collection is complemented by sweaters and a hoodie with Alpine elevator patches. Appenzeller Gurt is thus launching the first vegan Appenzeller Gurt in its history.

On the (wrong) way to a vegan belt
It took a long time to find a vegan alternative to leather belts. Some detours via apple peel, mushroom or pineapple leather were taken. A lot of things had to be dropped again because the material usually contained a large part of petroleum derivatives (ergo plastic), had too little stability for piercing the holes, or simply had an unattractive haptic. "We also had a hard time with the blanket "the main thing is vegan", when synthetic varnishes, toxic additives are used or simply more plastic is introduced into the world," says Caspar Eberhard, founder of Appenzeller Gurt.

That's how the makers finally ended up with the fabric belt. And the conclusion? Fortunately. After sewing on brass ornaments proved impractical, embroidered fabric patches won the race. Each patch is individually embroidered based on the classic ornaments of the Appenzell belt, which were jointly developed more than 60 years ago by the uncle and father of our producer Daniel Fuchs.

Scissors-Stone-Paper-Collab with Julian Zigerli

JULIAN ZIGERLI designs highly technical fashion that is easy to wear, modern yet timeless and functional. The playful and smart touch of the collections is underlined by the strength of the print designs. The label is famous for its print collaborations with artists from a wide range of backgrounds. The collaboration with Appenzeller Gurt came about as part of the Zurich designer's "Rock, Paper, Scissorli" collection, which harks back to Swiss traditions such as silhouettes, silk prints, wool knits and Appenzell customs.

Appenzeller jumper as amuse-bouche - hoodie for dessert

The "Appenzeller Sweater" was launched in February 2022 as a pre-release for belts - with great success. The pink and gray sweaters sold out quickly and are now available in the third edition. The cozy sweater with a round neckline features 9 Alpine elevator embroidery patches across the arms and chest. This allows the Alpaufzug to move from hand to hand of the wearer when the arms are outstretched. A fun alternative to the belt, where the alpine elevator is on the hips.

Together with the fabric belt, the simpler version was also presented yesterday as a hoodie with a Geissen patch on the chest.

In good tradition

SchluIt's no secret that Appenzeller Gurt likes change. In almost 10 years as an online shop for Appenzeller belts, dog collars and accessories, the label has always questioned the existing and reinterpreted it. In addition to the fixed assortment, Appenzeller Gurt is always cultivating surprising cooperations with selected partners. With them, Appenzeller Gurt shares an understanding of design and aesthetic openness as well as an irrepressible joy in bringing together the old and the new, the conservative and the extravagant, in order to ultimately create strong stylistic statements for the present. Appenzeller Gurt was, for example, at the Paris Fashion Week 2020 with the high-fashion brand "Bode" or in the media with the collab with the hip-hop label "Double Goose".

Demands on us and the environment

Appenzeller Gurt tries to challenge the status quo not only with surprising collaborations, but also with regard to the manufacture of its products, which on the one hand means fair and mostly local production. On the other hand, 100% sustainable cow or deer leather is used for the majority of the products. The raw material for the cowhide comes from certified organic farms in southern Germany or from dairy cows in Tschiertschen GR and is vegetable-tanned in a pit tannery in southern Germany, i.e. without the use of chrome or other chemicals. In addition, Appenzeller Gurt replaces ornaments that have fallen off free of charge and shortens those that have become too long belts.
